When using the QM33120 for angle measurement, the variation is excessively large, and the PDoA readings also fluctuate excessively

When using the QM33120 to measure the relative position of the DWM3001CDK, the measured angle jumps significantly, and when checking the PDoA, the angle also varies substantially. What causes this, and how can it be resolved?

From my experience, none of the Qorvo UWB boards have 360 degree (omnidirectional) antennas.

And most can’t do 180 degrees, +/-90

So I think you have the antennas pointed wrong

For the DWM3001cdk, the antenna is on the non-component side of the board

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I think I have roughly understood your points.

During the actual tests, both the QM33120 and the DWM3001CDK remained stationary, so in this screenshot the physical positions of the two boards did not actually change. Regarding the angle, my QM33120 was in an upright position, and the DWM3001CDK was facing almost directly toward the antenna of the QM33120.

I am quite puzzled as to what might be causing such large fluctuations. If this issue could be resolved, it would be of great help to me.

My understanding and testing w the devices so far requires the flat side of both boards to be parallel and facing each other ( I wasted a month when I had the component sides facing each other and had horrible angle or timeouts)

And in my business application, if the user is below the cdk, then the cdk antenna should be down, and if the user is above the cdk, then the cdk antenna should be up
Non component side towards the receiver. We don’t use the vertical angle, but I also think there is a limit to the vertical plane impact on the horizontal angle detection.

The Murata Type2ab needs to be positioned the same, I have not tried the QM board myself

Hi rexxdad, I came across your response about the QM33120 angle/PDoA fluctuations. Your comment about spending a month dealing with bad angle readings really caught my attention.

We’re working on a robotics prototype using DW3000-based UWB modules. Our ranging is working well, but our PDoA/angle readings have been inconsistent.

The antennas in the dwm3001cdk and the Murata Type2ab are not Omni directional and are sensitive to the two end antenna alignment . Pointing at each other is good, pointing parallel is not as good, pointing beyond parallel is not good

The closer they are the more the flat antennas make a difference in the phase detection.

Our use is from 10 meters to 1. Lower than 1 meter the antenna alignment (or not) makes the angle too erratic

Thanks, that makes sense and is helpful. Our situation may be a little different. We’re getting solid ranging, but the PDoA/angle readings are inconsistent even under controlled conditions.

In your experience, aside from antenna orientation and very short distances, have you run into PDoA fluctuations caused by calibration, antenna phase/spacing, multipath, or firmware/configuration?

That’s really the issue we’re trying to troubleshoot.

our scenario is iPhone to DWM3001CDK or Murata Type2AB
we average them out over a couple seconds so the inconsistencies get muted, and the app is giving general (clock hour terminology) directions to the users.
