The Compatibility between QM33120WDK and DWM3001CDK

Hello,

I’m planning to use Qorvo’s products for indoor positioning.
However, I am still studying UWB technology as I’m not very familiar with the concepts yet, and I have a few questions.

I would like to ask if it is possible to use the QM33120WDK as a UWB node and the DWM3001CDK as an anchor in the same system.

From my understanding, it should be possible to obtain both distance and direction (angle) information between the QM33120WDK and DWM3001CDK. I would really appreciate any feedback or insights you might have regarding this setup.

Thank you in advance!

Hi @eeeeeeeeemh ,

DWM3001CDK doesn’t have the AoA feature since it has only one antenna port. You can use DWM3001CDK and QM33120WDK in the same system. For instance, you can obtain distance and angle from QM33120WDK, but only distance from DWM3001CDK.

Kind regards,
Emre

Thank you for your clear and thoughtful responses, even to complex explanations.

Based on my understanding of your previous answer …
if I mount the QM33120WDK on a specific platform and use it as a UWB node, while using four DWM3001CDK modules as anchors, are you saying that the node (QM33120WDK) would be able to obtain both distance and angle information to each anchor, assuming they are within the field of view (FOV)?

I apologize for asking again, but I hope you understand that I need to conduct thorough preliminary research for this study.

Yes.

Angle of arrival only requires the extra features on the receiving end in order to measure the angle. Transmission only ever uses a single antenna.

The accuracy of an angle of arrival measurement is dependent on the angle, it is best when the signal is from a direction perpendicular to the antennas. There is also an ambiguity as to whether the signal was from in front or behind the antennas.

While in theory angle data will give you a better position the noise and errors mean that it is normally far more effective to add more anchors if you need a more accurate position. However this isn’t always practical. The other advantage of AoA is if you need orientation information.

Thanks to your clear explanation, I was able to understand it. Thank you so much!
