Distance measurement of DW3120

Hi,

We are testing the distance measurement of DW3120 using our own hardware. A problem has been discovered that when two devices are placed on the ground, the distance between them will be much closer than when they are mounted on the equipment rack. How can DW3120 be configured to improve the distance on the ground?

By closer do you mean it reads a shorter distance than the actual seperation or do you mean the maximum range it works at is less?

Reading a shorter than truth distance is very unusual. It’s possible in certain enviroments with the wrong type of reflections but apart from that and poor antenna calibrations (which would impact all situations) I’ve never seen it. Putting the antenna on the ground would have all sorts of impacts on the antenna tuning but for that to have a significant impact on measured range is weird.

If you mean that the maximum range it will work at is less then yes that is expected. You improve it by either raising things off the ground or by changing the laws of physics. Normally raising things off the ground is the simpler solution.

It’s not that the true value is inaccurate. If both devices are placed on the ground, the distance between the devices can be measured within 10 meters. If both devices are raised to a height of 50 centimeters above the ground, the distance between the devices can be extended to 20 meters to complete the distance measurement. Our working condition requires the equipment to be placed on the ground, so the current task is to adjust certain parameters of DW3120 to increase the working distance by more than 10 meters.

You put to radio antennas very close to the ground and the signal strength will drop off at 12 dB for every doubling of the range rather than the 6 dB per doubling you get in free space.

So around half the range sounds about right.

Longer preambles and lower data rates are the normal methods to get more range.
