Can I use an external power rail to power the PAC5xxx device?

Can I use an external power rail to power the PAC5xxx device? That is, what if I don’t want to use the integrated DC/DC switch mode power supply?

Hi Brad, will be happy to help you with your question!

Yes, most PAC5xxx can operate without their DC/DC switch mode power supply as long as an external well regulated power source is provided. The main conditions to observe when applying power externally:

  1. Power must be applied at VP, and it must be less than 18V. Anything larger than 20V is considered an incursion into the device’s Absolute Maximum, and can adversely affect the device.
  2. On devices with VHM, simply connect VP to VHM and CSM, and ignore DRM. The VP-VHM-CSM node must see a voltage above the device’s UVLO (as per the device’s datasheet) and not exceeding the device’s Abs Max parameter.
  3. On device with VM, connect VP to CSM. VM can still be connected to the tri phase inverter high side. Once VP is powered externally, all subsequent rails (VP, VCCIO, V3P3, V1P8, V1P2) will power up accordingly and sequentially as per the device’s design.

Hope the info helps!
